Chapter 8
For the first time since she had come to Japan, Jasmine was behind the police tape. All around her were officers speaking quickly in Japanese, taking pictures and notes of the scene that Jasmine was sure they would use later. She had never been surrounded by such a sizeable police force before, and she felt almost silly standing there with her notebook in one arm and the crinkled file in the other.
"I did not want you to see," Daichi said. "You should not need to see the crime scene. I did not want to upset you."
Jasmine wanted to promise that she was fine, but one stubborn fact stood in her way. Whatever misgivings he had, he had still called her, and that meant something was very wrong.
"What changed?"
"He is getting faster. This body is new. There was just a murder last night."
"Are you sure it's the same guy?
"Another paper. Another poem. We need help â more than just talking. You are young, but you are smart. You must help us."
His desperation was clear even when he could not perfectly express it. She nodded resolutely and stepped towards the body. There were people in her way and she kept expecting them to stop her, but none of them so much as batted an eye. They allowed her within a few paces of the body, and even then she stopped on her own.
It was not Jasmine's first time seeing a dead body, but the sight did not get any easier. The victim was a young woman, and she reminded Jasmine of her vision in which a young woman had run away from an attacker. It could not have been the woman in front of her, but the dead body was a stark reminder of the fate awaiting that young woman if Jasmine and the police did not catch the killer in time.
The woman's face was still, frozen in a neutral expression rather than one of pain. Jasmine had been told that she had been stabbed once, and the pool of blood around her seemed to confirm it, but the familiar sight of the hostel's stationery hid the wound. Jasmine couldn't make out the haiku from afar, but she hesitated to touch it as it would mess up the crime scene.
"I don't enjoy being here," Luffy said. "I don't like the smell of the body."
Jasmine looked around for someone to ask about the haiku. She had nearly picked one out to ask for advice when she remembered that she couldn't even speak their language. She got out her phone to call Saku again. He hadn't answered the previous time, but she needed a translator badly, so she tried again.
His phone rang a few times. Still no answer.
She put her phone back away and looked around for Sato Daichi. She knew he at least spoke some English, and he was familiar enough with Jasmine that he would help. He was tall enough for her to make out his figure on the other side of the crime scene, and she wove her way through the other officers.
